How Can Your Dentist Treat Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition where a person’s sleep is repeatedly interrupted throughout the night. Many are not even aware that it is happening, but it is a serious problem that requires medical attention. It interferes with a good night’s rest and it puts your overall health at risk.

Below are a few examples of how dental professionals can help patients find solutions to this troubling disorder.

Types of Sleep Apnea

There are two types of sleep apnea. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is a neurological issue where the brain shuts down, causing lapses in communication with the muscles that control breathing. This typically is treated with medication.
The other type is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) where an obstruction prevents air from reaching the lungs. This may be caused by obesity, large tonsils, misalignment in the jaw, or a small throat.

Signs and Risks of Sleep Apnea

There are some clues your body gives that could indicate you are experiencing sleep apnea:

Waking up with a headache
Feeling groggy and tired during the day
Snoring loudly at night
Gasping for air during the night
Irritability during the day

Sleep apnea can affect the quality of your life, and it may be interrupting the sleep of your loved ones. There are serious health risks associated with sleep apnea as well. It can contribute to:

Heart disease
Obesity
Stroke
Heart arrhythmias
Depression
High blood pressure

If your sleep is deprived of the cycle where deep slumber occurs, then your body cannot sufficiently replenish itself.

Treating Sleep Apnea

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, then you may have received a CPAP machine. This mask is worn at night and it forces air into the nasal passages. Some people find CPAP machines uncomfortable and they cannot get accustomed to their use.

For those with obstructive sleep apnea, there are also orthodontic devices your dentist can design that keep the jaw in proper alignment so your breathing is not obstructed. Many patients find these more comfortable than the CPAP device.
