Dental Tips Expectant Mothers Need to Know

Jul 25 • 1 minute read

The human body is amazingly malleable and resilient. Pregnant women can expect many changes to their bodies, including their oral health. It’s important to ensure your pregnancy is spent preparing for your newborn child instead of at the dentist tending to tooth decay or gum disease.

At Solano Dental Group, our dedicated team has the training and experience to help expectant mothers maintain proper oral health throughout pregnancy.

Cavity Prevention

Pregnant women are at an increased risk for tooth decay. The hormonal changes that take place during gestation weaken the bacterial flora of the mouth and allow cavities to develop more rapidly. Preventing cavities is an important part of maintaining your health while expecting, and the following tips can help.

Drink plenty of water. Dry mouth can accelerate cavity progression, and that, coupled with the hormonal changes, can cause rapid advancement of decay.

Floss regularly. It’s vital to ensure plaque does not build up between the teeth. By flossing at least once a day, expectant mothers can help prevent the onset of gum disease.

Avoid sugary foods. If you must give in to sugar cravings, try to do so in moderation. It’s helpful to brush or rinse with water after consumption.

If you’re trying to get pregnant, it might be a good idea to address any lingering dental concerns prior to the later stages of pregnancy. Cavities left untreated can progress to more serious cases.

Be Wary of Developments

A pregnant body needs to put all its energies into growing the fetus and protecting itself from infection. Avoid additional complications by treating any oral health concerns before they develop into more significant issues. Enlist the help of your dentist throughout your pregnancy to ensure you maintain proper dental health.
